Have you heard about Ruth?

Hello Reader

A couple of weeks ago, I showed you a map of The Stables, that rather peculiar little English village where some of my stories take place.

Well, I thought it was about time you met a few of the people who live there.

Let's start with Ruth.

Most of the villagers think she's a stuck-up snob. And, to be fair, they're not entirely wrong. She's extremely wealthy, her family has lived in the village for centuries, and she does have a rather grand opinion of herself.

But have you heard about the scandal?

You see, Ruth had a perfectly respectable boyfriend. They'd been together for years. Then, quite out of the blue, she ran off to France with a judge. A judge, of all people!

Well, you can imagine the talk.

And would you believe it? Just a few weeks later, she came creeping home again, with her tail firmly between her legs. And the scandal she brought back with her! Honestly, you wouldn't believe half of it.

These days, poor Ruth tends to keep herself to herself, while the villagers whisper and snigger behind her back.

Still, I wouldn't want you to get the wrong impression. She's a likeable enough snob once you get to know her. And there's rather more to her story than the village gossips would have you believe.

Of course, the best way to get to know Ruth properly will be to read Spiral: A Love Story when it's published.

Until then, do try not to believe everything you hear about her.

Warm wishes,

James

Hello Reader A few people mentioned that committing to a full ARC read for a longer novel can feel a little daunting, which is completely understandable. So I thought I’d mention that there’s actually a large sample of White Silence, Red Justice available first — roughly half the book. That should be enough to know whether the story, atmosphere, and general level of Arctic gloom are likely to suit you before deciding whether you’d like the full ARC copy. This is a slow-burning supernatural...
